The SOUND MIND Project – A Journey with Dr. Daisy Bowman

At the heart of everything I offer, there is one guiding intention: to experience life in full flow from the heart and to inspire others to do the same. The biggest barrier I’ve encountered to this fully lived expression is a cloudy, busy, burdened state of mind—a feeling of restriction, constriction, and disconnection from our authentic selves, which in turn creates a sense of separation from others and from the whole.

As I explored my own inner landscape and began to experience clarity and lightness in my mind, I realized that sound-based practices were the most effective tools I had encountered. From escaping the beeping machines in the hospitals where I worked to immersing myself in the sound of Om or simply listening deeply to my inner voice, I discovered that every time I worked consciously with sound, I arrived at a more cohesive, connected, and attuned experience of life.

It truly feels like the difference between day and night—feeling good or not—regardless of external circumstances. This realization fuels my passion to develop accessible, easy, and even fun sound-based routines for anyone, transforming what might otherwise be considered “niche” or “esoteric” practices into everyday tools for well-being.

I am increasingly convinced that sound-based practices offer a powerful antidote to the technological overload affecting our senses. If mobile phones and screen use are fragmenting our attention and making it harder to remain present, then working consciously with sound can bring cohesion, clarity, and a sense of integrity back into our being.

A Sound Bite of My Journey So Fa…

(Did you get it? As in… do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do… Ahem… okay, sorry!)

My starting point is that I always truly struggled with feeling overwhelmed by emotions

As a child, the only times I glimpsed stillness and flow were when I was sitting at the piano. Years went by without ever experiencing that feeling again, until I rediscovered music through kirtan.

From the start I felt how immersive it was and realised for the first time how I was living most of my life behind a screen of numbness. I felt a combination of peace, joy, elation, and authenticity. It inspired me in the most natural way to explore more deeply.

During this time, I was introduced to mantra chanting and experienced profound shifts in my consciousness through chanting the Gayatri mantra.

This path led me to live in a house where we played and offered kirtan, and despite our differences, we always seemed to come together at the heart level through music.

I was encouraged by my spiritual teachers to dive deeper into the essence of sound itself, and I immersed myself in chanting the pure sound of Om. After a short time of daily practice, I realised that my emotions no longer had the power to overwhelm me. I had found my inner ground.

I continued my journey with daily bija mantra chanting, a practice that supports holistic mental well-being.

At the same time, I made a major life shift—listening to my inner voice, I left my unfulfilling career as a junior doctor.

The sounds of the hospital had always been deeply unsettling to me, as was the vibrational intensity of city life.

I was inwardly guided to leave London and live in rural Germany, where I studied Ayurveda and deepened my understanding of sound from the Vedic perspective.

Over the years, I have enriched my daily sound practice by embarking on the journey learning the Indian raga system.

Through all of this, one of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is the importance of cultivating a compassionate inner dialogue. One of the greatest sources of my suffering had been my own harsh self-criticism.

Now, I offer sound meditations, monthly kirtans, a meditative mantra choir, harmonium lessons, healing sound and flow classes with singing bowls and vocal alap, true voice workshops, and personalised sound journeys within Ayurvedic consultations.

Through all of these experiences, I have come to understand that the process of creating sound is, at its core, an act of deep listening.

What I’ve Discovered About Sound Practices

They unify. Sound has a harmonizing effect, helping us reconnect with ourselves and others.

They soothe the nervous system. The vibrations of sound can shift us into a deeply relaxed state.

They create mental clarity. By carving out space in the mind, they open up new possibilities.

They unlock creativity. Sound practices help free up expression and inspiration.

They are accessible. Even without instruments, sound is always available as a tool for healing.

They counteract digital overload. Sound practices help bring us back to the present moment.

They reconnect us with nature. Sound deepens our awareness of the rhythms of the natural world.

They offer perspective. I can now view both negativity and positivity with more spaciousness and detachment.

They deepen listening. I’ve learned to hear beyond words—to sense the intention behind speech.

They cultivate intuition. By tuning in deeply, I can perceive the energy and “vibe” behind situations.

I believe that if we restore our capacity to truly listen, we can bring integrity back into our own systems—and ultimately, into the way we live in connection with the natural world. If sick minds create a sick society, then what could clear, vibrant, and healthy minds create?
